State Senator Eddie Melton ran against the incumbent Democratic Mayor of Gary Indiana and presented a new vision for the city. Often ignored, Gary fought tirelessly for his constituents in the Republican-controlled State Senate, and he wanted to do the same for them in the mayor's office.

It's hard to primary an incumbent, especially during weirdly-timed municipal elections. But Sen. Melton worked hard and communicated with voters across the city. He won a resounding victory in the primary and went on to cruise through the general election.
